Crowdsourcing a Sustainable Future

Which sustainable future do you want to live in? Join the crowdsourcing initiative to accelerate investments in transformation!

The Deep Transitions Futures research project has developed three future ways of life that are more fit for tackling global challenges such as climate change and growing inequality. In a global crowdsourcing initiative, the project introduces the three scenarios and asks participants to choose which future they want to live in. Results gathered through the crowdsourcer will be used to mobilise the finance sector to start investing in transformation and a sustainable future.

Are you curious to see what the future could look like? And are you keen to achieve a sustainable world? Then please participate in the crowdsourcer by following these two steps:

  1. First, watch this video introducing the three future worlds:

2. Then, start the crowdsourcer.

Completing the crowdsourcer should take no more than 10 minutes of your time.

A Second Deep Transition Towards Sustainability

Deep Transitions Futures is an interdisciplinary research project that strives to accelerate a Second Deep Transition – a shift from linearity, excessive waste and mass production as well as fossil fuel dependence towards circular and low carbon economies. For this shift to come about, the systems our modern societies are built on, including mobility, energy and food, need to be transformed in order to become sustainable and future-proof.

To explore and make tangible what these transformed systems could look like, Deep Transitions Futures has developed three future world scenarios that display life in 2050 if we were to take radical action against climate change and growing inequality now.

Through a crowdsourcing campaign, the project now presents these three futures to a diverse and international audience and asks them to choose which of the three futures they want to live in and which innovations and actions they think are needed to make this world come about?

Investment Philosophy for Transformative Investments

The results of the crowdsourcer will help the Deep Transitions research team uncover which of the three futures appears to be more desirable in certain regions than others, what the shortcomings and opportunities of the three worlds are and how to move towards achieving them. Ultimately, these insights will inform a philosophy for transformative investments that the Deep Transitions team is developing in collaboration with a Global Investors Panel. This investment philosophy shall contribute to mobilising the finance sector to invest in radical system change and a sustainable future.

Deep Transitions Futures is a flagship project of the Utrecht University Centre for Global Challenges (UGlobe) and a collaboration between UGlobe and the Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU) at the University of Sussex Business School. The project is supported by James Anderson and Baillie Gifford & Co and led by Professor Johan SchotProfessor Ed Steinmueller and Susanne Keesman.
